YAKIMA -- Joel Koopmans, who led Sunnyside Christian's boys to the Class 1B state title two months ago, will play for Dordt College in Iowa next season.

Koopmans averaged 17.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 3.7 assists per game as a senior and was named the Associated Press' 1B player of the year. He was also the most valuable player of the 1B state tournament.

The Dordt College men's basketball team was 19-10 this season and spent most of the season ranked in the top-25 in NAIA Division II basketball.

ARENA FOOTBALL

AF2, investors talk about details

Representatives from arenafootball2 met with local investors Tuesday in Yakima to discuss the group bringing an indoor football team to Yakima.

Brady Nelson, a member of the league's executive board, didn't disclose any names of the investors or where the almost 2-hour meeting took place. The majority owner of the Spokane Shock does plan on owning a minority stake of the Yakima team and said mainly the two groups hashed out the minutiae of a potential deal.

"This is the first in-person meeting with this group," said Nelson, who began this process almost a year ago. "It wasn't rah-rah arena football is so amazing. We talked numbers."

Nelson expected the investors to think about the information for awhile before continuing the process. He'd like any potential deal done by mid-June so the team can begin planning for kicking off a season in the SunDome by March of 2009. There are other potential out-of-town investors interested in bringing a team to Yakima, but Nelson said his group continues to seek a local ownership group.
