Grandview fills spot on council

GRANDVIEW -- The Grandview City Council on Monday unanimously appointed a longtime resident and community college employee to fill a vacant position.

The seat had been empty since March, when Robert Morales resigned because new job responsibilities caused schedule conflicts. He had been on the council since 1996.

Appointee Diana R. Jennings' term is scheduled to last until Dec. 31, 2009. She could then run for re-election for the second half of Morales' term, which would have expired on Dec. 31, 2011.

Jennings is a student services coordinator for Yakima Valley Community College. She serves on a Central Washington University advisory board and helped organize last year's Grape to Glass gala fundraiser at the college.

The other three candidates were Mary Lynn Barrett, Coralea Farris-Pickett and Javier Rodriguez.

Mayor Norm Childress said all four were good candidates, but Jennings' mix of interest in the community and willingness to serve ended up winning out.

The motorcycle operator, Dennis Clutchey, was in good condition, a Regional nursing supervisor said Monday evening.
