Local report -- CWU's Nilsen shines in finale, despite losing pair to NNU

NAMPA, Idaho -- Central Washington lost both games of a doubleheader to Northwest Nazarene on Saturday to end its season, but CWU senior Jamie Nilsen nonetheless went out in a blaze of glory.

Though the Wildcats fell 10-8 and 6-5, Nilsen's remarkable career ended with the Wildcat shortstop going 4-for-7 to run his single-season hit total to a school-record 87 and his batting average to .468. He also scored five runs, hiking his single-season school mark to 65.

Nilsen, Central's leadoff hitter, also finished with
10 home runs and 59 RBI in 51 games.

At the university's hall of fame banquet in Ellesburg, he was named the school's male athlete of the year while fastpitch standout Mallory Holtman was named female athlete of the year.

West Valley's Kevin Walkenhauer, a sophomore infielder-pitcher, capped a strong finish by driving in five runs -- three on a 2-for-5 performance with a triple in the opener and two with a double in the nightcap. He finished with a .330 average, a team-high five triples and 36 RBI.

The Wildcats finished 20-12 in GNAC play and
30-21 overall while Nazarene was 15-17 and 32-22 -- the most wins in school history.

YAKIMA VALLEY 7-18, WALLA WALLA 0-4: At Walla Walla, Levi Mitchum pitched a complete-game two-hitter in the opener and the Yaks hammered out 20 hits in the nightcap to end their season on a positive note.

YVCC finished 10-18 in Eastern Region play and 21-23 overall. The Warriors fell to
16-12 and 28-18.

Mitchum, a freshman right-hander from Highland, struck out four. In the second game, Taylor Dailey and Seth Englebert each went 4-for-4.

Mitchum had a no-hitter through six innings, yielded back-to-back singles in the seventh, then finished without allowing another safety. He walked four.

Englebert doubled, tripled and drove in four runs while Justin Marlow was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a triple and five RBI.

Linescores were not available.

 

COLLEGE FASTPITCH

Yaks two-timed at Wenatchee

WENATCHEE -- Eastern Region champion and
No. 2-ranked Wenatchee Valley ended Yakima Valley's fastpitch season with a 6-0 and
4-1 doubleheader sweep Saturday.

The Yaks, who finished 11-17 in regional play and 18-26 overall, managed only two hits in the first game. Brooke Bigby, who capped a standout two-year career by pitching both games, was a combined 3-for-6 with an RBI. Danielle Villegas also was 3-for-6.

"You always want to do better," said YVCC coach Chuck Bodeen, "but we had a good season. The girls played hard and we definitely got better."

The Knights improved to 23-5 and 40-10.

Pynch signs with Spokane

Chris Pynch isn't done making memories in Spokane just yet.

The Riverside Christian senior signed his letter of intent to play on the Spokane Community College men's basketball team next year, his mother, Diane Pynch, said Friday.

Pynch was the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association's Class 2B Player of the Year. The 5-foot-10 senior point guard also was the Greater Columbia B Player of the Year and averaged 17.2 points per game this season. RC finished sixth at the Class 2B tournament in Spokane.

More accolades for CWU

ELLENSBURG -- The honors keep coming for Central Washington fastpitch standouts Mallory Holtman and Holly Rossman.

The Wildcats' first baseman and catcher, respectively, have been named to the Division II West Region second team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Outfielder and leadoff hitter Kasey Druffel also made the team.

Holtman, the GNAC player of the year, had already been named all-conference first team for an unprecedented fourth time and is a finalist for CWU female athlete of the year.

Rossman and Druffel were also all-conference first-teamers. Holtman and Druffel were seniors while Rossman was a junior.

 

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD

Amos earns All-Academic honor

ELLENSBURG -- Highland's Haley Amos has been named to the GNAC All-Academic track and field team for the third consecutive year, heading a list of 13 Central Washington athletes to make the squad.

A senior exercise science major, Amos has compiled a 3.74 grade point average.

Nick Collins, a junior from Zillah, made the team for the second straight year, having compiled a 3.43 GPA in exercise science.

Raquel Gonzalez from Kittitas (sophomore, paramedics, 3.57) and Stephanie Cooke from Ellensburg (sophomore, music education, 3.45) were other local athletes to qualify.

Also making the women's squad were senior Marcie Mullen of Sedro-Wooley, junior Becky Scherer of Lake Forest Park, senior Stephanie Druktenis of Bellevue, sophomore Mary Seidler of Goodyear, Ariz., sophomore Mary Bakeman of Whidbey Island and senior Sarah Benson of Kent.

Other men's qualifiers were senior Josh Kirk of Kennewick and sophomore Tyler Fischer of Cashmere.
