SUNNYSIDE -- A 4-year-old Mabton boy was in serious condition Saturday evening at a Seattle hospital after a two-vehicle crash, officials said.

Jose Birrueta was being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after first being taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital.

The crash was reported about 10:50 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Maple Grove and Outlook roads, about a half-mile west of Sunnyside, the Washington State Patrol reported.

The driver of the Honda Accord that Birrueta was riding in failed to yield at the intersection while headed north on Maple Grove, troopers said. The second vehicle, a Chevrolet pickup headed east on Outlook, hit the Accord.

The pickup driver was 41-year-old Gregorio Garcia of Sunnyside. He was not injured. He was wearing his seat belt.

The Accord's driver was 32-year-old Jose Birrueta of Mabton.

The patrol reported he was treated at Sunnyside Community Hospital, along with two other passengers in his car,30-year-old Fabiola Birrueta and 12-year-old Luis Birrueta, both of Mabton.

A Sunnyside nursing supervisor said the driver was not listed as a patient; the passengers were treated and released.

Birrueta was expected to face charges of negligent driving, officials said.

Drugs or alcohol were not suspected in the crash.
