Life Choices will benefit when you get your car's oil changed

A local Oil Can Henry's is holding a fundraiser today for Life Choices, a Yakima organization that offers support to women who are dealing with an unplanned pregnancy or the aftermath of abortion.

The benefit takes place from noon to 4 p.m. today at the Oil Can Henry's at 414 S. 72nd Ave., near Rosauers supermarket and the AutoSpa.

During the event, drivers will receive a free, 20-point, full-service oil change with conventional Castrol oil for donating items such as diapers, formula or cash.

All proceeds and donations will go to Life Choices, formerly the Crisis Pregnancy Center. The organization began in 1986 with the mission of providing options to abortion. Today, it gives free pregnancy tests, referrals, post-abortion counseling and classes on parenting and the importance of making healthy choices.

All services are free.

For more information, visit www.lifechoicesyakima.com, or contact Oil Can Henry's at 966-8300 or och_yakima@hotmail.com.

Pancake breakfast will aid Children from Chernobyl

Yakima Children from Chernobyl provides medical respite to children from the areas of Belarus contaminated in the 1986 Chernobyl explosion.

To help with the costs of bringing children here for medical care, the group is hosting its first pancake breakfast fundraiser May 18. The group provides airfare, ground transportation, visas, and medical, dental and vision care at no cost to the child, the child's family or the government of Belarus. The average cost per child is around $2,000.

The breakfast will be from 7 to 10 a.m. May 18 at Yakima's United Christian Church, 317 S. 41st St. There will be pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee, water and juice. Desserts will also be available. And music will be provided by the local group Mama's Pride.

Catholic Church holding a 'Come and See' event

Those who are interested in becoming Catholic are invited to come and see what the Roman Catholic Church has to offer.

The "Come and See" event takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Holy Family Parish Activity Center, Room 10, 5502 W. Chestnut Ave.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, is the process by which an adult is welcomed into the Catholic Church. This process involves personal prayer, the prayer and support of the parish community, and learning about Catholicism.

For more information, call Ree Kearns, director of RCIA, at 966-5344.
