A nod to Habitat volunteers

To the editor -- Yakima Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity volunteers play an integral role in our ability to build affordable housing, uplifting the many Yakima Valley neighborhoods and providing supportive services for the families that we serve.

This past year, volunteers have given thousands of hours of their time working at the ReStore, in the office, on the board, on committees or on the building site. Each one helps make a difference between a family living in substandard housing and impoverished conditions, and living in a decent, affordable home that they own.

America was built on the spirit of volunteerism, and we want to thank each one of the many excellent volunteers who give of their time, talents and energy to help us help people. Thank you!

Spotlight in a volunteer

To the editor - In celebrating National Volunteer Appreciation Week, we need to remember our community angel, Heidi Anderson. Mrs. Anderson is the director and full-time volunteer of Children's Wishes and Dreams, a local nonprofit agency that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses or life-altering injuries. She works tirelessly to make sure a dream is a reality for so many deserving children by working alongside her volunteers to raise funds locally (that are used only for local kids) and by processing the mounds of paperwork and making a zillion phone calls to make a wish a reality.

In addition, she does an outstanding job leading an army of volunteers who donate their time in support of this great effort.

Hats off to all our volunteers and to Heidi for giving so selflessly.

Kudos to Prosser teachers

To the editor -- May 6 was National Teacher Day. I would like to ask the community to help the school district recognize our teachers. Across our country, communities are saying "thank you" to the many dedicated teachers who work with and support the academic achievement of students.

Prosser's teachers are an excellent example of caring and dedicated professionals. Our teachers are highly qualified professionals who spend a great deal of their own time improving their skills to meet the most challenging time in our history.

As academic standards increase and accountability becomes the buzzword at the national and state levels, Prosser's teachers continue to meet challenges using improved, research-based methods for improving the academic performance of our students. Each year, our teachers strengthen their professional skills at all levels.

I would like to commend our teaching staff for the long hours and personal commitment to the students in Prosser. Prosser's students will continue to progress because of our dedicated teachers and their families, who support the long hours and personal time involved to teach in today's world. Our staff is the best, and it is an honor to work on their team!

A wonderful See Spot Run

To the editor -- Thanks and more thanks!

The turnout for the Humane Society's sixth annual See Spot Run on April 27th was terrific -- every year the number of runners, walkers, and tail waggers grows!

Thank you to the staff, board, volunteers, sponsors and contributors for making this fun and worthwhile benefit possible. Your time, energy and donations are truly appreciated. And a very special thank you to the people in our community who turn out for this event --this year and previously. You do a good thing for a multitude of homeless "good causes," with the added bonuses of receiving exercise, fun and fresh air.

Speaking as a board member, I can say all of us associated with the shelter are committed to doing all we can to find loving homes for the animals in our shelter, and to promote animal control through spay/neuter and responsible pet ownership. Rescue groups in our community share these goals and intentions, and also appreciate your generous support.

A newcomer on the scene this year was See Spot Ride, a great idea that has potential for additional fun and animal benefit in the future. Thank you all!

Generous Granger alumni

To the editor -- Sincere thanks to the 315 alumni, guests and friends who attended the 45th annual Granger Alumni Banquet on April 26. The gracious generosity of the alumni membership allowed 10 high school seniors to receive $13,500 in scholarship awards. The recipients and their parents attended at guests of the Granger Education Association. These eight classes were honored as well: 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978 and 1983. It was a wonderful evening filled with nostalgia, senior moments and fellowship.
