GRANGER -- Yakima County sheriff's detectives are making little progress in the investigation of a fatal shooting early Sunday at a birthday party for the victim's wife.
The 10 to 15 people still at the home when authorities arrived claim not to have seen anything, Chief of Detectives Stew Graham said Monday.
"We are in a situation in which even though a large number of people were there, no one seems to have seen or know anything," Graham said.
As many as 40 people were at the home when the shooting occurred.
The victim, Paul Erik Lopez, 24, died in surgery at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center.
An autopsy performed Monday confirmed that Lopez died from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to Coroner Maury Rice.
The shooting at 901 Guzman St. occurred within city limits. But Granger police asked the sheriff's office to conduct the investigation.
Graham said police arriving on the scene about 2:30 a.m. were able to stop several vehicles leaving the area and found some people who had taken cover behind the residence.
None of them, however, has provided any information, he said.
The party occurred inside the residence and in a tent set up in the rear of the home. Lopez was shot outside.
Graham said a weapon has not been recovered.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the sheriff's office dispatch center at 574-2500.
