Here are this week's volunteer needs in the Yakima Valley:

* MATH TUTOR: Hoover Elementary School in Yakima is looking for a math tutor volunteer. The volunteer will help first- and second-grade students work on addition, fact memorization and addition strategies. The volunteer is needed from 15 to 90 minutes a day, Monday through Friday, between 7:30-10:15 a.m. Students are eager to learn but need some small group assistance and encouragement.

All interested volunteers must fill out a packet and have a criminal background check completed by the agency before volunteering. For more information, call Sirena Phillips at 574-1933.

* DONATION COORDINATOR: Homeless Network of Yakima County is looking for a donation coordinator volunteer. The volunteer will sort donation items, mostly clothing, and inventory them. Training will be provided. The volunteer should be organized, dependable and like solitary work. The coordinator would be working alone, but there may be times when additional volunteers will be brought in to help, requiring supervision.

The coordinator would work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday and an occasional Saturday depending on need.

* DAY CAMP HELPER: Camp Fire USA is looking for volunteers to help with their "Race Around the World" Spring Day Camp from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 1-3. Volunteers will be assigned a group of 10 children, ages 5-11, to supervise doing crafts, games and outdoor play. Volunteers will also help with setup and cleanup of activities, and can work one day or all three.

All potential volunteers must have a criminal background check done by the agency before volunteering. Those with a CPR, first aid or food handler's card should bring a copy.

* THERAPUETIC RIDING: Pegasus Project is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association center providing therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities for people with special needs and disabilities of all ages.

Sessions are eight weeks long. Volunteers typically help out two hours a week -- on the same time, same day each week -- for eight weeks.

* ARBOR FEST: The Yakima Area Arboretum is looking for 10 to 15 volunteers to help out with Arbor Fest on April 12 from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers will be assisting in booths helping children do projects. Booth projects include paper sombreros, reading nature stories to children, an animal-drawing area, wind spinners, plant a tree area and butterfly art.

An orientation will be held at the Jewett Center on the arboretum grounds from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 8. A light dinner will be provided.

* CASA VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are needed to be advocates for abused and neglected children in the community. If you are willing to commit time to making a difference in the life of a child, you will be trained to serve as an independent advocate.
