'Santa's Breakfast' at Holy Family Church

Holy Family Church is sponsoring its fourth annual "Santa's Breakfast" on Dec. 6.The brunch menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, apple juice, coffee and hot chocolate.

Parents are invited to bring their cameras and take photos of their children with Santa.

A silent auction and raffle will also take place at the event, sponsored by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. It runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church gathering hall, 5315 Tieton Drive.

Admission is $4 for children ages 2 to 12, and $7 for those 13 and over.

 

Soup, sandwich being offered during Advent

Peace Lutheran Church in Selah is offering soup and sandwich suppers on Wednesday evenings during Advent.

The meal will be followed by a time of worship.

The suppers begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by worship at 6:30 p.m. Remaining dates are: Dec. 3, Dec. 10 and Dec. 17. Everyone is invited to attend.

The church is at 91 Wernex Loop, next to the junior high school track.

Catholic author sets three talks

Yakima's Holy Family Church is presenting talks from Catholic author and speaker Matthew Kelly for three nights this week.

The talks, appropriate for ages 12 and up, are free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be collected by the Matthew Kelly Foundation, a nonprofit that hosts programs and produces materials designed to help people become "the-best-version-of-ourselves."

Throughout the past 10 years, more than 3 million people in 50 countries have attended Kelly's talks, seminars and retreats.

The 35-year-old will speak from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the church, 5315 Tieton Drive.

Monday's talk comes from his book, "Perfectly Yourself: Nine Lessons for Enduring Happiness." The next two nights will focus on the roles personal relationships and spirituality play in helping people become "perfectly ourselves."

Selah Covenant marks 100th anniversary

Selah Covenant Church is celebrating its 100th anniversary on Dec. 6-7.

An informal social gathering takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. next Saturday night. The reception features appetizers, music, scrapbooks, photographs, interviews, time-capsule items, and a panel discussion at the church, 560 McGonagle Road in Selah.

Youth activities are also planned. And centennial souvenirs -- T-shirts, polo shirts, ball caps, coffee mugs and porcelain plates -- will be for sale.

A formal worship service takes place from 9 to 11 a.m. next Sunday. It will be followed by a reception with cake, fruit, and beverages.

The Swedish Mission Convenant Church formed in 1908 when Swedish immigrants arrived in Selah. They first met for worship services above the Selah General Store.

The church was built in 1910. By the 1930s, the church was conducting services in English. Eventually, the church changed its name and built a new building. It was completed in 2005.

Evangelist to speak at Shepherd's Heart

Evangelist Ruben Valles will be the guest speaker at Shepherd's Heart Church in Yakima Nov. 29-30

He will speak at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Lunch will be served immediately following the Saturday service.

Valles, from Fresno, Calif., will talk about how he was delivered from a life of drugs addiction and gang affiliation.

The church is at 2 S. 10th Ave., on the corner of Yakima and 10th avenues.

Korean culture on display next weekend

The Korean Presbyterian Church of Washington is hosting a free Korean culture program for families with adopted Korean children.

The event will feature demonstrations and information on topics such as history, folk music, art, and Korean food, among others. Traditional Korean wedding attire will be available for people to try on; they can also pose for photos in their wedding outfits.

New worship, times at Wesley United

Yakima's Wesley United Methodist Church is offering a "New Worship for a New Time."

Beginning Sunday, the church will offer a new Sunday night worship service. The 7 p.m. service will feature a new format with music, videos, drama and visual arts. But don't expect preaching or "churchy language."

"The service will be engaging, interactive and interesting for adults, youth and children," according to a church media release.

To kick off the new service -- as well as Advent -- the church will host a free chili feed and the chance to assemble an Advent wreath at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
