Don't trust the caller ID.
Yakima County sheriff's deputies warned Thursday that a new financial scam may be coming to this area.
The sheriff's office issued the alert after recieving a bulletin from neighboring Lewis County that authorities there have been dealing with a scam artist who is using caller ID technology to make it appear that the fraudulent call is coming from a legitimate source.
Some of the calls have falsely shown the sheriff's office identifier, according to the Lewis County bulletin.
Devices that change the displayed number can be purchased, Yakima County sheriff's officials said in a news release.
In the Lewis County cases, the caller has indicated that the person missed a call for jury duty and must pay a $25 fine in order to avoid an arrest warrant.
If the person resists giving debit or credit card information to make the payment, the caller then pauses to check the computer before saying that there is no warrant.
Authorities recommend that residents who suspect they are being scammed should double-check the phone book or Internet listings to determine if the number is valid.
People also shouldn't volunteer their financial information to unsolicited callers.
