A fitting tribute

To the editor -- I would first of all like to thank Scott Spruill for writing and the Yakima Herald-Republic for publishing on the front page Nov. 16 the beautiful story about Shayla Holwegner's return home. I think this was a very fitting tribute to this courageous and faithful young woman. I know for myself it was a much needed wake-up call to refocus on things that are truly important in life and let the other stuff in life sort itself out, such as the economy, the election, etc.!

I spent three years with my grandson enduring much of the same as Shayla, living at Ronald McDonald House, undergoing much of the same surgeries and experimental treatments. I learned that the children who have to suffer with cancer are oftentimes much stronger than those who do not.

Shayla is in my thoughts and prayers and I commend her and her family for being so willing to share their story and their faith.

Deeply touching

To the editor -- My wife and I just want to say thank you for the Veterans Day guest commentary, "A friend never forgotten." We read the story to our family on Veterans Day morning. I thank John Foster, the guest commentator, for sharing his experience with Gary Keller from Yakima as they went through basic training as young Marines and then headed off to Vietnam, where Gary gave his life for his country.

John's words about Gary's charm, and the kind of man he was, who cared about others and went out of his way to make them feel better, deeply touched our family. I wish Gary had made it back, and I somehow could have known him. We are so thankful that he, and so many other great men and women like him, have been willing not only to comfort their friends and others in difficult times, but to pay the ultimate price for all of our freedom. Veterans are the lifeblood of democracy, and without them, it surely would die.

Thank you, John Foster, and thank you, Gary Keller.

Uncivilized

To the editor -- The subject of human life continues to be a topic of interest on your opinion page.

My only question is how any nation can be considered civilized when the destruction of their young is sanctioned?

Retire Hastings

To the editor -- Predictably, those of us who believe Doc Hastings' record ranges from abysmal to nonexistent were overwhelmed again at the polls. This time, however, his re-election suggests that the 4th Congressional District has become an even more remote island of political irrelevance when one considers the broad advances of the Democrats.

Therefore, I would like to strike a deal. First, it is obvious to me the only remarkable thing about Hastings' service is his lapdog obedience to the House Republican leadership. Second, it must cost quite a bit of federal money to keep each congressional office going.

So I propose we simply retire Hastings, cut out all expenses associated with his office, and agree that whoever is the leader of the House Republicans be granted authority to cast a proxy vote in behalf of us in the 4th Congressional District. The federal money saved could be sent back to the various school districts in the 4th District on a pro rata basis to reduce class sizes.

We would functionally be getting the same type of representation from Washington, D.C., as we have now, and our schools could use a bit of extra cash.

Great racket

To the editor -- Let me see if I've got this right. A couple of tribal members start a business, Schaptakay Labor Works LLC, and apply for a business license with the tribe. They get the license, and now they want employers within reservation boundaries, tribal and nontribal, to pay 50 cents an hour for every hour worked by nontribal members? This goes into their corporate coffers and is used how?

Wow! What a great racket, if it works. Is there a franchise? How do I sign up?
