Selah firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged an apartment at 201 Southern Ave. on Monday evening.
Deputy Chief Gary Hanna said investigators have determined the fire began in shrubbery next to a four-unit apartment complex and spread into the attic of one unit.
The occupant was awakened by a neighbor and escaped without injury.
Firefighters, responding to the 6:56 p.m. alarm, found a fire in the attic. They were able to control the blaze in about 20 minutes, Hanna said.
Hanna estimated total damage at about $25,000, including $5,000 to contents of the home from water and smoke damage.
No firefighters were injured.
