WAPATO — A state trooper escaped serious injury Saturday in a crash with another motorist who ran a red light, the Washington State Patrol said.
The crash happened early Saturday when a vehicle driven by Irvin J. Bautista Santiago, 20, of Yakima ran a red light at the intersection of U.S. Highway 97 and West Wapato Road, according to a news release.
Both the trooper, 26-year-old Michael Christensen, and Bautista Santiago were taken to the hospital as a precaution, but neither man was admitted. They were both wearing their seat belts.
Although Bautista Santiago was cited for a traffic infraction, neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the crash, the patrol said.
The vehicles involved — Bautista Santiago’s 1994 Jeep Cherokee and Christensen’s patrol car, a 2008, Ford Crown Victoria — were totaled.
