Dr. Marilyn Drake Lewis, DVM, 86, passed away September 3, 2012, in Sacramento, CA. She was born January 29, 1926, in Yakima and was raised in the Wenas Valley and on a fruit ranch in Selah. Marilyn attended Selah High School where she was valedictorian of her 1944 high school class. Her six Drake sisters were also raised in Selah and graduated from Selah High.
Marilyn grew up reading books and riding horses. She was always an animal lover.
Marilyn went to Washington State University and graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine. At the time, there were few women veterinarians and only three others in her class.
After graduating from WSU she worked as a veterinarian in Coulee City for five years and then moved to California and established a veterinary practice in Fresno.
When she retired from being a full time veterinarian, she volunteered at an Animal Hospital for several years. She also owned a small sheep ranch.
Marilyn was an amazing person who touched many lives. She was never happy unless she was helping others.
Marilyn is survived by four children: Sandra Iyall of Fresno, CA, Richard Iyall of Fresno, CA, Debora Iyall Haight of Sacramento, CA and Diane Lewis of San Francisco, CA; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Three sisters survive Marilyn: Eileen Reitmeier of Selah, Betty Kuhl of Baker City, OR, and Phyllis Day of Maple Valley, WA.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her mother Alberta E. Drake and father Ernest Drake of Selah. Also by three sisters, Gladys Roberts of Yakima, Dorothy Paradis of Yakima, Virginia Puyear of Yakima and two brothers, Charles and Ernie Drake who both died during childhood.
A memorial service will be held in Fresno, CA in October.
