SPOKANE — Sammi Jo Blodgett’s 3-pointer with 17.9 seconds left Wednesday night to lift Yakima Valley to a 72-70 victory over Spokane in an East Region women’s basketball game on the Sasquatch’s court.

The win, YVCC’s seventh in its last eight games, concluded the Yaks regular season at 10-5 in the region and 17-11 overall. They will enter the NWAACC tournament on March 2 in Kennewick as the region’s No. 3 seed.

“We talked early in the season and asked, ‘Would you rather win your first 10 or your last 10?’” coach Greg Oldham said. “We feel like we’ve played pretty well of late. We were 6-1 our second time through the East.”

Against Spokane, YVCC led 40-27 at halftime and 47-33 in the second half. The Sasquatch gradually came back, however, and took a 70-69 lead with 41 seconds to play.

Yakima Valley’s Jaimi Cox later emerged from a baseline scramble for the ball at the Yaks end of the court, then fired the ball out to Blodgett near the top of the key.

Her shot got nothing but net, after which Spokane hurried the ball into frontcourt, missed a shot and lost the rebound out of bounds.

Blodgett, fouled with four seconds to go, missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the Sasquatch managed only a halfcourt shot that missed badly at the buzzer.

Blodgett finished with 17 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Angelique Williams had 16 points, and she and Blodgett combined to connect on 5 of 11 3-pointers.

Hannah Lekson added 12 points and six boards for YVCC, which committed only nine turnovers to help offset 6 for 11 free throw shooting.

Rylie Holsinger led Spokane with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Yakima Valley’s first-round NWAACC opponent will likely be Lane, which is second in the South Region and also recorded an 84-54 win over the Yaks on Dec. 16.

“It really wasn’t that big a blowout,” Oldham said. “There was a stretch of about four minutes when our girls stopped playing hard and their players played really well, and the game got away from us.”
