HAYWARD, Calif. — Central Washington took a two-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning before Cal State East Bay scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth to win 5-4 in the season opener for both teams.
East Bay took the first lead of the game with a first-inning lead-off home run from Andrew Rodriguez.
The Pioneers then doubled their margin with a two-out RBI single from Jordan Wilder in the third inning.
Central Washington tied the game in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on consecutive errors and an RBI double and an RBI single.
The Wildcats (0-1) took the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning on RBI from Marc Garza and Justen Weigel.
East Bay (1-0) got a run back in the eighth on Roger Luna’s RBI.
They scored their final two runs in the ninth, with RBI by Wilder and Naea Kalehuawehe off CWU’s Davis Engel (0-1).
Zachary Wong (1-0) worked the eighth inning for the Pioneers to earn the victory.
