MOSES LAKE — Yakima Valley missed several opportunities and dropped a 76-68 East Regon men’s basketball contest to Big Bend on Wednesday night.

The loss dropped the eighth-ranked Yaks to 1-1 in the region and 11-5 overall. Big Bend, ranked fourth, improved to 1-1 and 12-4.

“We had some golden opportunities to steal one on the road,” said YVCC coach Ray Funk, who said the Vikings were without two starters due to injury. “We missed some free throws and layups at key times. The last three minutes, we probably missed three very makeable layups — there was probably some contact there, but they were still shots we normally hit.”

Joel YellowOwl scored 15 points and Montero Rice 14 for the Yaks, who had hit the 100-point mark in each of their two previous games. YVCC made only 3 of 13 shots from 3-point range and was 9 of 16 from the foul line.

Brendan Westendorf had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Big Bend, which was beaten last Saturday by Spokane, the team YVCC hosts on Saturday. Ryan Page had 19 points, going 9 of 10 from the field, and Brandon Funston added 13.

“We just didn’t make enough shots and enough plays,” Funk said. “They’re ranked fourth in the NWAACC and are a good team, but we had our share of chances tonight and didn’t get it done.”
