MOSES LAKE — Yakima Valley’s women rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit to tie their East Region game with Big Bend on Wednesday night, but ultimately were unable to overcome Alli Winters’ 28 points and a substantial rebounding deficit in a 71-69 loss.

YVCC coach Greg Oldham said the Yaks tied the score at 68, but were unable to get a go-ahead hoop.

The defeat left Yakima 1-1 in region play and 8-7 overall while the Vikings improved to 1-1 and 11-5.

Winters, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from St. John-Endicott connected on 9 of 19 field goal attempts including 7 of 13 from 3-point range. Teammate Sierra Zollinger totaled 14 points and 17 rebounds to lead a 57-36 thrashing on the boards.

“At halftime,” Oldham said, “we were down 13 (38-25) and they were beating us on the boards 35-16 and 20-5 at the offensive end.”

The Yaks also missed opportunities at the free throw line, converting only 6 of 13 while Big Bend was 16 of 24.

Point guard Sammi Jo Blodgett led YVCC with 17 points while also dealing four assists and collecting three steals. Jaimi Cox came off the bench to tie Blodgett for team scoring honors and did the bulk of her scoring in the second half.

“I was proud of the way we came back in the second half,” Oldham said, “but with a young team the thing we’re still trying to teach the girls is that you have to go hard for 40 minutes.”

Yakima Valley continues region play at home Saturday against Spokane.
