A sports and entertainment group has been hired by Central Washington to review the university’s athletic department.

Ice Miller LLP, based in Indianapolis, has conducted similar reviews at other institutions as well as compliance reviews for NCAA Division II, according to a CWU news release.

“With the announcement that Jack Bishop, our athletic director, of his intent to retire after this academic year, this is an appropriate time for us to conduct a comprehensive review like this,” CWU president James Gaudino said in the release. “It will also help us provide the framework as we begin the recruitment process for the new athletic director.”

The review’s goal, as stated by the university, will be to identify strengths and weaknesses of Central’s athletics and sports-related programs including the organizational structure, compliance with NCAA and GNAC regulations, finance, budget, facilities and fundraising.

It will then compare them with programs and procedures of similar D-II institutions.

University officials expect recommendations by the end of next month.

CWU sponsors 13 intercollegiate athletic programs including football, soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and cross country, baseball and fastpitch.

Central also offers 24 collegiate club sports, ranging from archery to lacrosse to rodeo to rugby, and the university’s intramural program provides some 20 different sports that typically attract about 2,500 students annually.
