The West Valley tennis team made it a clean sweep Tuesday at the CWAC district tennis tournament on the Rams’ home courts.

Two team titles, two singles titles and two doubles titles — all won by West Valley.

The victories earned the Rams five berths to the Class 2A state tournament May 24-25 at University of Washington.

And West Valley can nab three more Saturday at crossover tournament with the Great Northern League.

“They’ve just been amazing all season long,” Rams girls coach Eileen Merrill said of her squad that followed an unbeaten romp through conference play by racing away with the district title.

“It’s the most competitive group I’ve ever seen,” she said.

At the top of that lineup is freshman Chloe Goyette, who took the singles title with three straight-set victories to add a district title to the Coke Classic she won earlier this spring.

“She’s a complete player,” Merrill said. “She can play defense as good as anybody, but given the opportunity she has some weapons.”

While the trip to state will be a new experience for the regionally ranked club player, it’s become a rite of spring for Carly Riehl and Carley Schmidt. The senior duo earned its third consecutive state bid, and will chase a third medal after taking sixth place in Class 3A the last two years.

WV’s Caroline Goyette will face Selah’s McKenzie Kieser on Saturday at Ephrata for the conference’s No. 2 seed to state. Kieser, also a freshman standout in the club ranks, won Tuesday’s semifinal matchup between the two.

The Rams team of McKenzie and Dannielle Tanasse, can also nab a state berth Saturday. The tandem came into the tournament unseeded, but knocked out the No. 4 seed and pushed Riehl and Schmidt to a third set in Tuesday’s semifinals.

On the boys side, Aaron Farmer earned his fourth trip to the state tournament — and his first as a district champion. The No. 3 seed topped Rams teammate and top-seeded Daniel Foster in the title match.

Farmer was a district runner-up each of the last three years — singles as a junior and sophomore, doubles as a freshman.

West Valley’s Brian Ridd and Gabe Valley outlasted top-seed Michael Bosnar and Matt Jones 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 to win the doubles title. It’s the first berth to state for either player.

The Rams’ Josh Latimer and Carter Verbrugge can also claim a trip to state Saturday.

Unlike the girls, both finalists in the boys tournaments earned state berths. The third- and fourth-place finishers will play the top two seeds from the GNL to decide the region’s final pair of state berths.
