CHENEY — After scoring late to tie the match and raise the prospects of overtime or a shootout, West Valley’s boys soccer team was on the verge of a significant road upset in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament on Wednesday.

But the Rams came up a minute short.

Junior Brady Bendall scored off an assist from Canyon Silliman in the 72nd minute to pull West Valley even with Cheney, last year’s 2A state runner-up and the Great Northern League champion with a double-digit win streak.

But with a minute left in regulation, Cheney’s Cruz Galm scored off a serve from a corner kick, lifting the Blackhawks to the first-round victory on their home field.

“We were playing dynamite, but they got one in right at the end,” said West Valley coach Josh Koreski. “At least it was the No. 1 team in the state, so we can go out with a little bit of pride.”

Cheney (17-2) will take a 14-match win streak into a quarterfinal matchup Friday at Grandview (16-3).

Trevan Estrellado, who scored two goals against Toppenish in regional play on Saturday, scored the Blackhawks first goal in the 13th minute.

West Valley ended up 13-5-1.

“As a coach, I feel completely fulfilled with the season and way the guys handled themselves,” Koreski said. “Hopefully we’ll build on this next season. The older guys have left a legacy of having a will to win.”
