With four players scoring in double figures and nearly a fifth, Wapato’s boys earned a regional berth this weekend with a 68-59 victory over Clarkston in Wednesday’s CWAC-Great Northern crossover basketball games.

Second-ranked Pullman saved its league from a CWAC sweep but barely, edging away late for a 67-61 victory over Grandview.

Sophomore Christian Vela hit 7 of 8 free throws and led Wapato with 18 points, Adam Vela and Shawn Craig scored 12 points each and Marcus Guevara added 10. The Wolves used a 19-12 second quarter to take a five-point lead at the break and then scored 38 points in the second half to maintain the separation.

“We didn’t rebound very well in the first half but we really picked it up in the second half and controlled the boards,” said Wapato coach Derek Birley. “It was tough because Clarkston is a physical team. But we went after the boards more and we were aggressive to the basket on offense. It was a great win for us.”

Craig led the rebounding effort with seven boards. Sophomores Trevor Sperry and CJ Johnson combined for 36 points for Clarkston, which finished 16-8.

Grandview tried to beat much taller Pullman from beyond the arc and nearly pulled it off, hitting 11 3-pointers with four each from Andy Rodriguez and Bryce Carpenter. Isaiah Ruiz had nine assists for the Greyhounds, who ended up 14-10.

But Pullman’s 6-foot-6 Corey Langerveld worked inside for 19 points and 10 rebounds and 6-4 Race Martin had another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The home team also enjoyed a significant scoring advantage at the foul line — 16-2.

All four Eastern Washington teams will converge at Central Washington University for Saturday’s Class 2A regional bracket. In winner-to-state, loser-out games, Ellensburg (16-6) will play Pullman (23-1) at 4 p.m. followed by Wapato (18-6) vs. West Valley of Yakima (20-2) at 6.

Ellensburg handled Pullman its only loss, 57-51 on Nov. 30, and West Valley has defeated Wapato twice, 48-38 and 77-72.
