TOPPENISH — A calf auction generated enough money to distribute beef to about 1,000 families at the food bank Wednesday, according to a spokeswoman for Agri-Beef of Boise, Idaho.

A calf donated by a local cattlemen was auctioned multiple times, and the proceeds went to Beef Counts, a program launched in 2010 by the state’s beef industry to raise money and beef for Second Harvest, the regional food-bank supplier.

Sponsored by the parent company of Washington Beef in Toppenish, the auction was the second annual event that backers hope will become a tradition.
