SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Police have determined that a man’s gunshot injury, which prompted school lockdowns Tuesday, was an accident.
The 21-year-old man told investigators he shot himself in the hand while cleaning his gun Tuesday morning in his house on Decatur Avenue, Sunnyside police Sgt. Joey Glossen said in a news release.
Police learned about the incident from staff at Sunnyside Community Hospital, where the man drove himself, and placed area schools in lockdown, Glossen said.
The man owned the gun legally and police don’t anticipate seeking criminal charges, Glossen said.
