SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Tonight’s special City Council meeting to discuss a possible candidate for interim city manager has been canceled.
Mayor Jim Restucci told fellow council members in an email late Wednesday that he would not hold the special meeting as planned because, “The Executive Session item is no longer needed.”
The council had planned to go into a closed-door executive session to discuss the qualifications of a person they considered pursuing to take the vacant city manager’s spot on a temporary basis.
Fire Chief Aaron Markham has been filling in since the council fired interim city manager Frank Sweet on Feb. 11 for his handling of conflict with police officials. However, Markham is not interested in doing so for more than a couple weeks.
The city has lacked a permanent city manager since April, when Mark Gervasi retired.
The council also had planned to consider bumping up Markham’s pay to compensate him for his extra work and discussing the finance director’s position, also vacant, but Restucci’s email said the elected body can address those issues later.
