SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — A Sunnyside dairy has been nominated for a national award.

The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy nominated Skyridge Farms for its Outstanding Dairy Farm Sustainablity Award, which will be presented in April. The awards recognize dairy farms for practices that deliver economic, environmental and/or social benefit. Skyridge Farms was the only Washington dairy nominated.

The dairy was recognized for several energy-saving efforts, including installation of a programmable logic controller that runs key farm operations, such as a soaker cooling system for the cows. The dairy also installed high-volume, low-speed fans that adjust to barn temperature.

Skyridge Farms worked with several companies and organizations, including Pacific Power and Light, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Washington State University Energy Program, on developing its comprehensive sustainablity strategy.
