SUNNYSIDE — Six people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday evening north of Sunnyside on State Route 241, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Troopers said a Ford Expedition was northbound about 5:30 p.m. when it went out of control and struck a southbound Mitsubishi Mirage about 10 miles north of Sunnyside.

Francisca Ayala Prado, 40, of Mattawa — the driver of the Expedition — was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital. The one passenger in that vehicle — Juan Mendoza, 17, of Mattawa — was taken to Sunnyside Community.

Israel Sanchez Sanchez, 26, of Mattawa — the driver of the Mirage — was taken to Sunnyside Community. The passengers in that vehicle were Angelica Martinez Abundez, 21, of Mattawa, taken to Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center; Stephanie Martinez, 7, of Mattawa, taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle; and Israel Sanchez, 2, of Mattawa, taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

An update on each of their conditions was not immediately available. The 2-year-old Sanchez was stabilized and transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where a spokeswoman said he was in satisfactory condition.

The same spokeswoman said Stephanie Martinez was in serious condition Monday afternoon.

Troopers said they did not know whether Stephanie Martinez was using a child seat or other safety restraint; the others were using seat belts. Intoxicants were not suspected.

The crash was blamed on driving too fast for weather conditions, according to a patrol news release.
