The Yakima-based Thingamajigs soccer team made history last weekend by capturing the U-12 age division of the Washington State Girls Recreational Cup at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.
With 10 of their 13 players attending West Valley Middle School, the Thingamajigs became the first team from District 6, which covers all of Eastern Washington, to win a Recreational Cup state championship.
The Thingamajigs were especially stout on defense, defeating the Lake Stevens Titans 1-0 in the semifinals and then blanking the Tracyton Havoc 2-0 in the U-12 championship final.
Team members include Avery Heinle, Kailey Moen, Piper Lukas, Sydney Remsberg, Adysen Burns, Katharine Whitman, Jessica Caffrey, Zoe Orvald, Korie Wyckoff, Isabella Montelongo, Brianna Garfias, Dantzel Petersen and Jada Stevenson. The coaches were Jesse Heinle, Michael Moen and Euticio Montelongo
Tar Heels take 2nd in Hermiston
The Yakima Tar Heels took second place in the fifth-grade boys division at the Hermiston Holiday Hoops Classic AAU basketball tournament held this past weekend.
Playing with a short-handed roster of just eight players, the Tar Heels managed to go 4-1 in the tournament, registering wins over teams from the Tri-Cities and Hermiston before falling in the championship game to a team from Richland.
Tar Heels team members are Jarrin Baken, Jermaine Bass, Felix Garcia, Lincoln Holland-Boone, Earl Lee III, Nathan Sedgwick, D’Anthony Smith-Gary, and Jesus Vasquez Jr. They are coached by Earl Lee Jr.
