FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Ellensburg’s Taylor Wilson and West Valley’s Caitlin Quaempts turned in the fastest prelim times in their specialities and advanced to today’s championship finals in three other events during Friday’s qualifying rounds at the Class 2A state swimming and diving championships at the King County Aquatic Center.

Wilson’s team put itself in prime contention for a team trophy with nine entries in the championship finals. West Valley has five.

Wilson, a junior, clocked 1 minute, 8.72 seconds for the top time in the 100-yard breaststroke by 1.3 seconds. She also qualified third in the 50 free and helped the Bulldogs advance in the 200 medley relay (second) and 400 free relay (third).

Quaempts, a sophomore, timed a career-best 24.32 for the top time in the 50 free by .61. That time ranks fourth on the Valley’s all-time list. Quaempts was also second in the 100 back at 59.88 and swam on West Valley’s top-five efforts in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Wilson, who is assured of raising her haul of state medals to 11, will have plenty of company in the championship finals, which get started today in the 2A class at 2:30 p.m. The top eight qualifiers compete in the championship finals and the next eight compete in the consolation finals.

Ellensburg sophomore Sam Denison turned in the second-best time in the 500 free and freshman teammate Alia Malella posted the fourth-best times in the 200 individual medley and 500 free. Denison and Malella will swim with Wilson and Alicia Hummel on the two relays.

Denison’s time in the 500 free of 5:24.56 is fifth on the Valley’s all-time list.

In the 4A meet, Eisenhower junior Landon Hopkins was 10th in the 100 back prelims, clocking 1:00.91, and will race in today’s consolation final.

Cassadie Moore of Sunnyside made the championship final of the 3A 100 breast, clocking a career best of 1:07.78 to move up to fourth in Valley history.
