YAKIMA, Wash. — Bail was set at $30,000 Tuesday for a motorist accused of causing a near head-on crash on Summitview Road that has left a Tieton woman hospitalized in serious condition.
Jose Luis Castro Martinez, 40, of Yakima is being held in the Yakima County jail while prosecutors consider the case, including a possible felony charge of vehicular assault.
Martinez was behind the wheel of a westbound Dodge Stratus that collided Monday morning with an eastbound Kia Soul on Summitview Road near Klendon Drive. A third vehicle then struck the Stratus.
The driver of the Kia, 51-year-old Marla Tuesley, was listed Tuesday in serious condition at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.
According to the Washington State Patrol, both drivers blamed each other for causing the crash.
But state troopers said evidence at the scene suggests Martinez was the driver at fault.
Martinez, who escaped with minor injuries, was subsequently jailed. Troopers said he smelled of alcohol and admitted he’d been drinking the previous night.
Results of a blood draw are pending.
