MABTON, Wash. — Fire marshals are investigating the cause of a blaze on New Year’s Day that left an elderly woman with burns over 60 percent of her body.
The fire, reported at 9:31 a.m., destroyed a home in the 400 block of Third Avenue.
In a news release, Yakima County Fire District 5 said a second occupant of the home, a man, also suffered burns to his hands, arms and head while fleeing the flames.
The occupants, said to be an elderly couple, were taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital, then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. An update on their condition was not immediately available.
The District 5 news release said the fire burned two vehicles parked next to the residence. Altogether, damage was estimated at $160,000.
No cause was announced. The scene was turned over to county fire marshals for investigation, according to the news release.
Firefighters from Prosser assisted.
