WAPATO, Wash. — A man who was struck and killed by a train last week has been identified as 41-year-old Joseph Shippentower of Wapato.
Yakima County Coroner Jack Hawkins said Tuesday that Shippentower was struck Friday afternoon while lying on Burlington Northern-Santa Fe tracks near the intersection of North Track Road and Donald Road in Wapato.
The death was not considered suspicious, Hawkins said. Autopsy results are pending a toxicology screen.
The incident was the second fatality on train tracks in Wapato in consecutive months.
On Jan. 14, 19-year-old Tyrone Colwash was struck and killed by a BNSF train while walking on the same tracks just north of town near Jones Road.
Hawkins said the young man was listening to music on earphones and apparently didn’t hear the train approaching.
