SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Sunnyside police arrested a man they say was drunk when he crashed his car into a house early Tuesday.

At 3:15 a.m., a resident of the 1300 block of South Street called 911 to report a car had crashed into the house and the driver was attempting to drive off, according to a news release from Sgt. Joey Glossen.

Officers arrived to find a Honda embedded in the garage with the entire front wall collapsed around it. Damage to the home was estimated at between $20,000 to $40,000, Glossen said. The vehicle was destroyed.

Investigators said the driver was a 20-year-old Sunnyside man who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. He failed to stop at a stop sign at an intersection while driving south on 13th Street and attempted to turn at a high speed before leaving the road and crashing into the house, authorities said.

Sunnyside ambulance workers treated the driver for minor injuries, Glossen said. Police have requested charges of driving under the influence and illegal possession of marijuana under the new state statute.

Nobody in the house was injured.
