YAKIMA, Wash. — Two mountain passes near Mount Rainier are closed for the season due to heavy snow and slide activity.

State Route 410 over Chinook Pass is closed from its intersection with State Route 123 on the west to Morse Creek, about five miles east of the summit, the Department of Transportation said Tuesday.

State Route 123 over Cayuse Pass is closed between its junctions with U.S. Highway 12 and State Route 410.

At an elevation of 5,430 feet and with more than 100 avalanche paths, Chinook Pass typically closes in November. Cayuse Pass is at 4,675 feet. Last year, both passes closed by Nov. 14 and reopened in May.
