— Yakima Herald-Republic business reporter Mai Hoang talks about the improving job numbers in Yakima County in recent years on this week’s Web broadcast of “Open Mike.”

In 2013, Yakima County reported an average of 77,000 nonagricultural jobs, a year-over-year increase of 0.9 percent, according to preliminary figures from the state Employment Security Department. Reflecting a robust ag economy, agricultural jobs saw double-digit percent increases for several months in 2013, which played a role in expanding hiring in other sectors.

“Open Mike” is a Web broadcast that takes you inside the Herald-Republic newsroom, where reporter Faulk speaks with other members of the staff to gain their perspectives on a newsworthy event or an aspect of the newsroom operation.

Each new broadcast is posted by noon Wednesday at yakimaherald.com.
