YAKIMA — The average price for a gallon of gas in the Yakima area rose 4.2 cents in the past week, 1.2 cents above the national average in the same time.

The average Yakima price per gallon was $3.33 on Sunday, according to GasBuddy.com, a website that monitors gas prices across the country.

Sunday prices at the 91 local stations surveyed were a half-cent lower than the same day a year ago and 9.9 cents lower than a month ago.

The national average, at $3.27 per gallon, is 1.7 cents higher than a year ago and has decreased 13.2 cents per gallon in the last month.

GasBuddy.com noted that a refinery fire near Bellingham in early 2012 caused a West Coast spike in gas prices. The fire, Hurricane Sandy and other factors prompted higher prices and contributed to a record national average per gallon price of $3.60
