MOXEE, Wash. — Authorities are still investigating the death of a 59-year-old Union Gap man, who apparently drove into a deep canal about a mile southeast of Moxee.
Just before noon Monday, a passing motorist spotted Dennis F. Weaver’s 1999 Ford F250 pickup at the bottom of the mostly dry canal in the 1200 block of Walters Road, according to a Washington State Patrol news release.
Firefighters from East Valley pulled Weaver’s body from his vehicle, which was on its side roughly 30 feet below.
His next of kin has been notified.
Investigators said Weaver, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was headed south on Walters when he drove off the road and into the canal, the release said.
No one saw the pickup leave the road and it’s unclear how long it had been at the bottom of the canal, Lt. Terry Liebrecht said. Liebrecht said it’s not known if the accident occurred over the weekend or Monday morning.
It’s also not clear if alcohol and or drugs were involved, the release said.
