SEATTLE — A 3-year-old Sunnyside boy accidentally shot in the face two weeks ago remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Police still have not released the boy’s name because of his age, said Sgt. Jon Chumley of the Sunnyside Police Department.
However, the boy’s father is Refugio Lara, 31, of Sunnyside, Chumley said.
Police believe the boy accidentally shot himself Oct. 22 with Lara’s handgun while riding in a pickup with his father and two siblings. Lara rushed the child to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where he was treated and transferred to Seattle, police said.
Police are still investigating, Chumley said.
Lara had a valid concealed weapons permit and has been cooperating with investigators, police said. Officials with the state Child Protective Services have contacted the family, which is routine when a child is badly injured, police said.
