— A Selah man was charged Monday with second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend’s toddler.

Prosecutors said David Holbrook, 22, told police was baby-sitting the 23-month-old child last Wednesday when he tossed the child into the air with enough force that the baby’s head struck the ceiling.

Detectives said the child had stopped breathing and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

In the affidavit written by Officer Rich Brumley, it said that Holbrook delayed in calling 911 and initially lied to investigators because “he didn’t want to believe that he caused the baby’s death.”

Holbrook remains in Yakima County jail in lieu of $1 million bond.

Police have not released the name or gender of the child.
