YAKIMA, Wash. — The 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head Tuesday south of the Yakima police station had been wounded in a shooting two months ago, a police spokesman said.
Capt. Rod Light said the boy was shot Nov. 1 in the 400 block of South Fourth Street — the same block where he was shot Tuesday along with a 17-year-old companion. Both youths remain hospitalized in critical care.
“Same kid, same block,” Light said, adding “That’s pretty unusual.”
Light said no arrests have been made yet in Tuesday’s attack — another similarity to the first attack.
In that incident, the 15-year-old — who was then 14 — was unable or unwilling to say who shot him beyond a vague description that proved unhelpful to investigators, Light said. Gang activity is suspected.
“He wasn’t just winged the first time, either,” Light added. “Shots to the groin and the leg. Very painful.”
In Tuesday’s attack, which occurred about 11 a.m. on a bright sunny day, the 15-year-old and his 17-year-old companion were shot near the corner of Fourth and Maple streets, about three blocks from the police station.
The younger boy suffered a gunshot to the back of the head and was alive but not responsive. His companion, who had been shot in the back, was described as conscious but uncooperative.
Based on empty shell casings recovered at the scene, Light said two large caliber pistols were used in the attack. He defined large caliber as anything from .40-caliber on up.
Two spent bullets were also recovered, including one that struck a car parked about a block away.
Despite its proximity to the police station, the neighborhood is considered a Norteño stronghold and has been the scene of a number of shootings over the years, some in broad daylight.
The city’s last homicide, the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old gang member, occurred just a few blocks away on Oct. 23 near the Yakima Transit Center.
Two suspects are in custody, including a 15-year-old who police say is the shooter.
