YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima police said they arrested a couple Tuesday evening for holding their 15-year-old in the family home’s bathroom for the past two days.
The girl’s mother and stepfather were booked into the Yakima County jail on suspicion of unlawful imprisonment, according to a news release from the Yakima Police Department.
The girl reported that she tore up a section of bathroom flooring in order to crawl underneath the house and escape, police said. She walked from her home, in the 1700 block of West Prasch Avenue, to her nearby grandmother’s house, where police were called.
While officers were at the grandmother’s house, the suspects arrived. They were detained and questioned.
The news release did not state why the girl was held in the bathroom.
Two minor children from the parents’ home were placed with other relatives as a result of the investigation, police said. The 15-year-old was taken to a separate location.
Bail was set at $50,000 on the girl’s stepfather and $15,000 on the mother.
