A Toppenish man who led a sheriff’s deputy on a high-speed chase was sentenced Wednesday to 12 months in custody.
Jose Fernando Ortiz, 41, can serve the time in home detention if he’s eligible, according to the sentencing order for his guilty plea to a felony charge of attempting to elude police.
In June, Ortiz sped up instead of stopping after he was clocked at 84 mph on West Wapato Road, according to a report.
The chase ended when the pursuing deputy rammed Ortiz’s car into a ditch as Ortiz tried to pull a U-turn.
Ortiz apparently fled because his driver’s license was suspended, according to the report.
