YAKIMA — Two downtown bars are holding fundraisers for the family of an Army staff sergeant who was killed in Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt. Wade Bennett, 26, was killed in November when an enemy bomb exploded. Bennett served with the 53rd Ordnance Company, an explosive-ordnance disposal unit based at the Yakima Training Center.
Bennett is survived by his wife, who is pregnant, and a 2-year-old daughter. He was buried this week at Arlington National Cemetery.
Today, the Speakeasy, 104 S. Third St., will host a fundraiser for the family from 6 to 9 p.m., including a raffle for donated items.
On Friday, The Sports Center, 214 E. Yakima Ave. will hold a benefit concert by Short Bus Bobby. The Yakima-based band, which plays classic rock with a mix of other rock styles, is donating its time, and donations for the Bennett family will be taken at the door. The performance is expected to start about 9:30 p.m.
