Lena L. Owens, 92, of Toppenish died Wednesday at home. Mrs. Owens was born in Wapato. She worked as a laborer in the fields as a young woman and later was a school teacher for Mt. Adams, Wapato and Yakama Tribal School as an Indian language instructor.
Survivors include a daughter, Bernice Owens of Toppenish; three sons, Anthony Charlie of Toppenish, Frank Knychief of Warm Springs, Ore., and Sidney Owens of White Swan; and three sisters, Amelia, Lorena and Viola Sohappy, all of Wapato.
Dressing services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Wapato Longhouse, with overnight services to follow. The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the longhouse, with interment to follow in the Union Gap Cemetery. Arrangements are by Colonial Funeral Home of Toppenish.
