EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Drew Schreiber came up short Wednesday in his quest to qualify for next month’s World Youth Championships for track and field in Europe.

The senior-to-be at Eisenhower finished seventh in the 800 meters for 16-17 year olds, clocking 1 minute, 52.91 seconds. The winner, Robert Ford, was timed in 1:51.13.

“Drew just did not run well,” Ike coach Phil English reported. “He was sore from yesterday and just didn’t have a good race.”

Ford and possibly runner-up Carlton Orange, who ran a 1:51.56, will compete in the World Youth Championships scheduled for July 10-14 in Denetsk, Ukraine.

Schreiber was second in Tuesday’s qualifying heat. His time of 1:55.61 was incorrectly reported in Wednesday’s Herald-Republic.
