Bree Wanderscheid finished in a tie for 23rd place in the individual competition, helping the Washington state team finish in sixth place in the Girls Junior America’s Cup this week in New Mexico.

Wanderscheid turned in rounds of 77-77-72 on the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course for a 228 total that left her tied with two golfers from Hawaii. The Goldendale High standout had the second-best showing among the Washington golfers, trailing only Sierra Kersten, who tied for ninth at 221.

Mexico’s Ana Paula Valdez was the individual champion with a 5-under par total of 211 (71-73-67), helping Mexico win the team title as well.

Three members of Mexico’s four-player team shot under par, giving them an impressive 8-under total of 633 and a 16-shot victory over Southern California.

Washington had a total of 679, which was just a shot behind San Diego for fifth place. The other team members were Ashley Fitzgibbons and Lauryn Keating.

The Junior America’s Cup, which concluded Thursday, featured 18 teams from the western United States, Mexico, British Columbia and Alberta.
