MATTAWA, Wash. — Four people were hospitalized Friday following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 243 and Road 24 Southwest at the western edge of this small Grant County city.
According to a Washington State Patrol news release, a 2003 Chevrolet Impala driven by Selena Sandoval, 17, of Mattawa failed to yield while turning left onto SR 243 from Road 24 Southwest about 6:40 p.m.
It collided with a 2003 Chevrolet pickup, which Gary Lakey was driving north on SR 243. Both drivers were injured. Lakey’s passenger, Roxzana Lakey, 55, of Sunnyside and Sandoval’s passenger, 6-year-old Sandra Sandoval, were also injured.
According to the State Patrol, both drivers and Roxzana Lakey were taken to Samaritan Health Care in Moses Lake, while Sandra Sandoval was taken to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland.
A nursing supervisor at Samaritan said Saturday that none of them were patients there. A nursing supervisor at Kadlec said Sandra Sandoval had not been there, but that Selena Sandoval had and had been transferred to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. A Harborview nursing supervisor said Saturday that Selena Sandoval was in serious condition.
All four were wearing seat belts. Neither drugs nor alcohol were involved, according to the release.
