YAKIMA, Wash. -- Sunnyside’s wrestling team, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, will aim to repeat as team champions at Saturday’s 23rd annual SunDome Mat Classic, which has expanded to 27 teams for the day-long event.
Zillah, last year’s SunDome runner-up and the 2011 champion, returns along with Granger, currently top-ranked in 1A with two defending champions in Victor Almaguer and David Cantu. The Leopards also have a defending champion in Diego Hernandez.
Last year Sunnyside scored 225 points — the most in 13 years — and many of those Grizzlies are back.
In addition to the always-tough crews from Zillah and Granger, plenty of scoring depth will come from the 2A ranks with three of the state’s top teams in attendance — No. 1 Othello, No. 4 Toppenish and No. 5 Fife.
Fife’s Glenn Robertson has a shot at becoming a three-time SunDome champion, having won titles previously at 106 and 120 pounds, and teammate Monike Failauga will look to repeat at 285. The Trojans edged Sunnyside last week at their own Larry Brown Invitational.
Other returning champions include Tyrus Kemp of Ephrata and Jace Malek of West Valley-Spokane.
Matches start at 10 a.m. with championship finals set for 6 p.m.
Teams competing: Bellingham, Cheney, Davis, East Valley-Yakima, Eisenhower, Ellensburg, Ephrata, Fife, Goldendale, Granger, Hanford, Highland, Kennewick, Klahowya, Naches Valley, Othello, Peninsula, Prosser, River Ridge, Sunnyside, Toppenish, Wapato, Wenatchee, West Valley-Spokane, West Valley-Yakima, White Swan, Zillah.
