CEDARVILLE, CA - Edith “Dolly” Helen Matson, 89, is at peace in heaven. Dolly died on February 6, 2014 in Cedarville, California. She was born in Yakima to George and Helen Witherell on January 29, 1925. She grew up in Naches and Tieton and went to Tieton High School.

Dolly Witherell married Vernon Matson on November 30, 1943. They raised their three children, Henry, Alan and Judy near an apple orchard on Finn Hill, west of Tieton. The family enjoyed many memorable experiences together including jeep trips to mountain lookouts, afternoon coffee with Mimma Matson, and walks through the blossom-filled apple orchard in the spring. The family also shared many great gatherings, camping trips and card games with the Ylitalo, Niemi, Ojala and Lilja families.

Dolly was a great homemaker who baked the most delicious apple pie imaginable. She enjoyed fishing, raising flowers, cooking family meals and just looking out the living room window at the rural scenery of Tieton. When a party was thrown at the Kobli warehouse, Dolly and Vernie danced smoothly to the sounds of Glen Miller and other Big Band records. Dolly and best friends, Rose and Vickie, often got together for cake, coffee and to talk about food, the weather and the “no good” their kids had been up to.

After Vernon’s death, Dolly met Emerson Drake in 1978. They lived and worked in Tieton until June of 1988. Dolly and Emerson retired in 1988 and moved to Newell, California. They often explored northern California and occasionally traveled to Michigan and Yakima to visit family.

Dolly is survived by her companion of 35 years, Emerson Drake of Newell, California, son Alan (Barb) Matson of Yakima, daughter Judy (Dave) Clements of Spokane, sister Dorothy Anderson and sister-in-law Joy Witherell, both of Yakima. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Andrew (Shannon) Matson of Kirkland, Annie Matson of Ellensburg, Abigail (Matt) Meyer of Fremont, Nebraska, Brad Matson, Kem (Scott) McKim, Kelly Matson, all of Klamath Falls, Christina (Andrew) Soto of Victorville, California and Lisa Clements of Spokane. She was loved by her 6 great-grandchildren, Blaise Matson of Klamath Falls, Christian and Faith Soto of Victorville, California and Lily, Evie and Emilia Meyer of Nebraska.

Dolly was preceded in death by her husband Vernon, son Hank and his wife Janice of Klamath Falls, brother George Witherell of Yakima, sister Juanita Kolstad of Olympia, her sister Jackie Jones of Turner, Oregon, and brothers-in-law Jack Anderson and Jim Kolstad.

Dolly spent the last six months at the Surprise Valley Nursing Care Center where she received excellent and loving care from the nursing staff.

Dolly’s enthusiastic personality, her caring and love of friends and family will be missed. A celebration/memorial of Dolly’s life will be announced at a later date.
