YAKIMA — Prosecutors have filed a felony charge of vehicular assault against a young motorist accused of causing a crash last Sunday north of Selah.

Gage Van Wyk, 19, of Yakima was charged in Yakima County Superior Court under multiple theories behind the crash: driving while intoxicated, driving recklessly or driving unsafely.

Police said Van Wyk was at the wheel of a Toyota 4-Runner that rolled over early Sunday in the 9500 block of Wenas Road, about nine miles north of Selah.

An unbelted passenger, 22-year-old Joshua Blevins, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered a serious head injury in the wreck.

Blevins, of Selah, remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

State troopers said Van Wyk appeared to be intoxicated. He is free on $25,000 bail. Arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 24.
